a collected life
things I collect:
rocks, minerals and fossils
books (don't most people?), mostly non fiction
coins with pictures of animals on them
I had a feather collection but it got stolen in 7th grade
lanterns and bottles
vintage lace and ribbon
vintage postcards, photos and prints
things I would like to collect:
taxedermy specimens
antique furniture (mostly art nouveau era)
designer foulards
related tangent:
Museums evolved from private collections. The cabinet of curiosities popular in the 1700's were these institutions' forbearers, just like private book collections preceeded public libraries. It is a modern notion that museums are a public, educational resource and a cultural neccessity. I love museums. My first priority when visiting a new city is to find out which museums it has. I am especially fond of natural history museums. here in Florence we have "La Specola" and the one in Vienna is very beautiful as well. I hope the challenges of the contemporary economy that public museums now face will not sacrifice their quality but will instead force them to become more creative in their programming, not simply in respect to curation, but in the areas of education and community envolvement. I remember the elation and wonderment I felt as a kid going to the royal ontario museum and I truly want every kid in the world to feel that way.
